Face covering rules in Ireland's main supermarkets

It's been weeks since we were told to stay at home to save lives. The transition wasn't easy, but we did save lives. Now that we are nearing the end of the lockdown, there are questions we are all asking ourselves. Are we safe yet?

As we all may very well know, the pandemic isn't over. The virus is still there, lying in wait, preying on when we will all let our guards down, to then attack. The one thing we don't need right now, is a spike in the number of cases as this will result in another lockdown. We all want to carry on with our lives and bring things back to normal as soon as possible. As such, the Government has been advising on the wearing of face coverings in public places.

Official guidance states: "Wearing a cloth face covering is recommended in situations where it is difficult to practice social distancing, for example, in shops or on busy public transport. Wearing of cloth face coverings may help prevent people who do not know they have the virus from spreading it to others. If you wear one, you should still do the important things necessary to prevent the spread of the virus."

Here's what various Irish supermarkets say about if you should wear a mask or not.

Tesco have not stated any specific rules on the wearing of face masks and it is advised that all customers follow Government guidelines.

Aldi state on their website: "It is down to individual customer preference if they wish to wear a mask in store. We are following guidance for colleagues based on the most up-to-date advice from the relevant authorities. The HSE is not recommending the use of [masks/gloves] and says that people should prioritise good personal and hand hygiene instead."

A spokesperson said: "We have made available a substantial quantity of gloves and masks for our staff to wear, and also gloves for customers. We offer this choice because some people feel safer wearing gloves. However we continue to recommend the HSE guidelines of continuing to wash hands every 30 minutes as one of the most important measures in stopping the spread of the Covid 19 Coronavirus."
